Dr. Downey graduated from the University of Washington Medical Center, one of the top medical schools in the country. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and a fellow in the American College of Surgeons. In 2006 he was selected as a diplomate of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, a very select group of training program directors and thought leaders in the specialty of plastic surgery, which indicates that he has met the highest level of requirements for practicing plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Downey was the head of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and served as the Director of the Cosmetic Services Group during his sixteen years of leadership at Virginia Mason Medical Center. He consistently ranks as one of the Pacific Northwest’s “Top Doctors” by Seattle Magazine and Seattle Metropolitan Magazine and was nominated by his peers as the Outstanding Plastic Surgeon in Puget Sound Consumer’s Checkbook. He earned the coveted Northwest Society of Plastic Surgeons “Outstanding Contributions in Plastic Surgery” award. He has served as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

With more than 30 years of clinical experience in the specialty of plastic surgery, Dr. Downey appreciates the physical and emotional issues people face when considering plastic surgery. It takes bravery to have the courage to set a goal to improve yourself, and to disclose your goals and concerns to another person, even a professional like a plastic surgeon. He believes that the most successful patient relationships are based on mutual trust and relaxed, direct communication. Therefore, Dr. Downey encourages candid conversation about your desires and concerns prior to surgery – even those that you may not feel comfortable sharing with family or friends. This openness is important to developing the treatment plan that is right for you.
