| The days before surgery can make some people anxious though many also eagerly look forward to their surgical result. We believe that those patients who are well rested, well nourished, and well educated about their upcoming treatment are able to get through these days with bearable “jitters”.
To Stay or Not To Stay - Dr. Downey is determined to help all patients to be comfortable during and after the surgery. Many patients are able to have outpatient surgery and will be sufficiently recovered to leave the same day. The criteria for going home after outpatient surgery are sensible: you need to be able to eat and drink, walk, go to the bathroom on your own, and have good pain control.
After some operations, you may benefit from an overnight or even multiple night stay at Northwest Hospital, where you will be safely cared for under the supervision of Dr. Downey and the Northwest Hospital nursing staff. When we are planning your surgery in the pre-op period is when you and Dr. Downey will discuss the likelihood of your having to stay in the hospital for a while.
